The Kids Settle In

We wanted to show you all a few photos of the kids as they're settling in.  

Thanks to the West Area Quilters in MN, we gave each of the kids a little handmade quilt of their own.  

We've introduced them to the playground and the Library Program, which they're really enjoying.

We've also taken them down to the Jungle Hospital for a check-up.  

Everybody is settling in and we're getting to know each other better.  It's been an exciting week!

Thanks to the Clover Hill Group!

We just enjoyed having a group come from Clover Hill Church in Virginia.  It ended up being the same week we brought the first kids into our Children's Home, so it made for some busy days.  We really appreciated how flexible the group was as we changed things to accommodate the new kids.

While they were here this group spent a lot of time with the children in our village.  At the elementary school they taught English classes and put a fresh coat of paint on one of the buildings (with lots of assisstance from the kids!).  They also helped with our Library Program and put on a soccer camp.  Our village kids had such a fun week.

The group kept busy by visiting Instituto El Rey for a day of work projects and a soccer camp and they also helped us do some work on David & Olga's house.

Thanks guys for all your hard work and great attitudes!  We enjoyed having you.

Meet Our Kids!

On Thursday we picked up the first four kids from Social Services in La Ceiba.  We got to know eachother a little bit by taking them out to lunch and to a place to play.  Then we drove them up to our place and introduced them to their new family -- our house-parents and their two kids.  So far it's been going really well and the kids are settling into their new life.

We think the kids will do really well with their home out in the country.  They loved the ride up the mountain and seeing all the farm animals along the road.  Our road follows the river most of the way and one of the little girls was so excited to announce "another river!" every couple of minutes.  Up at our place the kids are thrilled with the playground, especially the swings, and are looking forward to swimming in our creek.

This is what we've been working towards for so many years!  We've finally transitioned over from the "orphanage without kids."  It's so exciting.

Note: Since this post was written two of these kids were adopted and two were claimed by their grandmother.  While we were not anticipating their quick departure, we were able to give them excellent care for the time there were with us.  We treated them for parasites and malnourishment and they left us with a healthy glow.

Ruby: Our Newest Team Member

If you've followed our ministry for long you'll remember hearing about Ruby and her five sisters.  They're a family of girls that we've been helping for the past four years.  Here's a picture of us, the Furrows, with five of the sisters, and their uncle (yes, their uncle), when we first got to know them.

Well, we're thrilled to announce that Ruby is now a part of our staff.  She's been working with our Library Program after school for awhile and now she will be doing that and helping in the Children's Home.  Since her five sisters are now under her guardianship, they are all living up on our property now with Ruby.  This is the culmination of what we've hoped and prayed for for a long time.  We are excited to have them all so close to us where we can invest more in their lives.

Finish Line Fundraiser

Now that we're getting ready to move the children onto the property, there are several larger projects that we must finish.  We need to complete the construction of our Volunteer House, send a container of supplies from the US to furnish the homes, and bring electricity to the Volunteer House and the Furrow House.  In addition to these urgent projects, we want to continue the work on our local elementary school and launch our new Children's Ministry.                                                    

To help pay for these major projects, we are doing a Matching Grant Fundraiser.  We have been promised $13, 500 which will be matched 100% if we can raise that much from our donors.  Please consider helping us meet this goal.  Help us finish the home for Ruby’s family and for volunteers and groups.  This will greatly help us care for our kids and minister to our community.

Still Waiting...

We just wanted to let everyone know that we're temporarily on hold with bringing in the kids.  Due to internal issues at the Social Services office here, we had yet another inspection yesterday (#4).  We're once again waiting on paperwork to be processed.  They've told us Wednesday is the day!  Please pray with us that everything goes well.

We'll keep everyone posted as things happen.

Here Come the Kids!

We just wanted to share that we are SO close to getting the first kids.  In the past month we've been working with Honduran Social Services in La Ceiba, which is our regional office.  The woman we're associated with here is working to help us start well.  She has a heart for particular children that she will be permanently placing with us.  After a couple attempts, La Ceiba Social Services came and inspected our facilities.  They've given us the green light.  We've met the first few children that we'll be taking in and their paperwork is being finalized so they can transfer into our care.  Hopefully we'll take them home with us in a couple days.  We're just waiting for the final word so we can go and pick them up!

The little kids we're starting with are so precious.  We're so excited to introduce them to everyone here on the blog, but we'll wait on that until they're in our care and we have some photos to share.
